3 Meditations on Circles

For string orchestra

minimum 2,2,2,2,1

c. 15'

2019

Written for the string ensemble accompanying Cantores Olicanae's spring concert in 2019 to be partnered Arvo Pärt's Berliner Messe

These three pieces are inspired by the work of Swiss composer Jürg Frey and his set of
pieces based on cyclical processes.

Each passing Meditation focusses on a different
process of cycling the notes, whether that be the strings as an ensemble looping around
chord sequences, the players individually rotating around note cycles, or simply canons
between the voices of the ensemble.

The Meditations have been written to complement the contemplative atmosphere of the Pärt, and the audience is encouraged to close their eyes and let themselves drift along with the music, becoming lost in the atemporal wash of notes.
